Bio
Dr. Near is originally from New Hampshire and grew up spending time on the backside of Rockingham Park with her grandfather. Dr. Near followed her love of thoroughbred racing to complete her undergraduate degree at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs and veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013.
Dr. Near completed a field internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in 2014 before returning to the Mid-Atlantic region to practice on the racetrack for several years. She returned to KY in 2021 to serve as a resident veterinarian at a prominent thoroughbred breeding farm prior to joining Bluegrass Equine Surgery at its inception. Dr. Near's broad experience on the racetrack and as a farm veterinarian has allowed her to build a diverse practice from new foals to elite athletes. She enjoys all aspects of equine practice including acupuncture, imaging, and Thoroughbred sales work.
In her spare time Dr. Near enjoys spending time with her husband James, a local farrier, and their two daughters. She loves riding and caring for her assortment of OTTBs, baking, and going to the races.
