Veterinary professionals are able to use stem cell therapy to help promote healing, reduce inflammation and relieve pain in cats and dogs suffering from osteoarthritis and a variety of other conditions. Our vets explain more here.

What is the stem cell therapy process for pets?

Veterinary stem cell therapy uses stem cells drawn from the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, or fat of your pet or another animal of the same species to help heal your pet.

Your vet will inject the stem cells into the diseased, damaged, or injured area of your pet's body where the stem cells will work to repair and replace damaged or dead tissue, reducing inflammation and pain as well as and promoting new tissue growth.

What is stem cell therapy used to treat?

Stem cell therapy can be used to help treat a variety of injuries, diseases, and conditions in both dogs and cats. Some of the most common are:
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fractured bones
  • Damaged ligaments
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Liver and kidney disease
  • Oral disease in cats (stomatitis)

Depending on the conditions being treated, your vet may also recommend additional measures to use in combination with stem cell therapy such as a monitored diet, an exercise plan, and other therapies.

Is stem cell therapy a safe procedure?

Because the stem cells being used are usually from your pet there is very little chance that they will be rejected, making it a relatively safe procedure. However, as with all veterinary procedures where the skin needs to be punctured, there are some levels of risk such as infection, injury, or inflammation.

Your veterinarian will talk to you about any risks your cat or dog may face during the procedure, to help determine if stem cell therapy will be a safe and effective option for your pet.

What is the recovery period for cats and dogs after stem cell therapy?

The recovery period for cats and dogs after stem cell therapy is different for each pet and generally depends on their individual case. Some pets exhibit improvement in several days whereas for other animals it could take several months.

How much does stem cell therapy cost?

The cost of your pet's stem cell therapy will be dependent on various factors such as the condition being treated, the vet you see, and how much of it your pet insurance will cover. To get an estimate for the cost of your cat or dog's stem cell therapy contact your veterinarian.

Is stem cell therapy right for your pet?

It can be very difficult to predict the outcomes of your pet's stem cell therapy treatment. Many cats and dogs do well with the therapy but relapse later, while others show remarkable lasting improvements in their health.

Your dog or cat's suitability for stem cell therapy will be decided by the laboratory supplying the stem cells and your vet based on your pet's overall condition, age, breed, previous treatment and response history, severity and duration of the ailment, and their sedation risk.
